Turkey and Trusts: Why Thanksgiving is an Ideal Time to Bring Up Estate Planning

Whether it’s the turkey, sweet potato soufflé, or pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving dinner brings everyone together – and that's exactly why it's the perfect time to talk about something most families avoid: estate planning.

Why Now?

In today’s crazy busy world, it’s not often that you get the whole family together … and, in some cases, three (or even four, if you’re extra lucky) generations in one room. With everyone gathered and relaxed after a delicious meal, use this rare gathering to start important conversations about the future.

Keep It Simple

You don't need to discuss every detail of your estate plan while filling your plate. Start small:

●      Where are your important documents? Make sure someone knows where to find your trust and will, healthcare directives, and insurance papers.

●      Who's your emergency contact? Does everyone have updated information?

●      What are your wishes? If something happened, what would you want your family to know?

How to Start the Conversation This Thanksgiving

Pick a low-stress moment.  Think during a post-dinner walk, while washing dishes, or lounging on the couch with a glass of wine. Keep it short — maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Let everyone know this isn’t a heavy meeting, just a check-in so nobody has to guess later.

Lead with gratitude. Try: “I’m thankful we’re all here, and I want to make things easier for you if something unexpected happens.” Use “we” language. Focus on care, health decisions, kids’ guardians, and who can step in short-term for an emergency.

Make it practical. Confirm where key documents live, who has copies, and who can be reached in an emergency. Share contact info. If emotions run high, press pause and set a follow-up for early December.

Make it About Love, NOT Money.  Frame the conversation around caring for each other. "I want to make sure you're all taken care of" lands much better than diving into asset division details.

The Real Gift

Having these conversations might feel awkward, but it's one of the most loving things you can do for your family. When the time comes, you’ll know their wishes and they'll know yours – no one will be left guessing.
